Figure
Lisa Konno
In 2025 and 2026, Lisa Konno presented the production Figure together with the Dutch National Opera and Ballet. She designed garments made of textiles and ceramics that produce sound through the movements of the performers.
These garments formed the starting point for a performance in which they not only function as costumes but also determine the dance, the music, and the story. Konno depicts the cycle of a woman’s life and her relationship with her body, beauty, and clothing. She does this by incorporating references to the different stages of life into the clothing and objects.
For example, she created graphic playsuits and ceramic masks for childhood, bare and jingling gloves for puberty, and non-flexible skirts and ceramic bodices for later life stages. The costumes illustrate the roles that fashion assumes in life: from a means of self-expression par excellence to an outright impediment. With this, Konno poses the question: when is fashion liberating, and when does it become a form of oppression?
