Lovers Paris

Félix González-Torres

Two simple strings of light bulbs together form a moving image of connection. With the subtitle, Félix González-Torres invites you to see them as lovers. In his minimalist work, he often highlighted the devastating impact of the AIDS crisis. In 1991, he lost his partner to the disease; five years later, he himself would follow.

Time plays an important role in this tender and fragile work: the bulbs provide warmth and light, but eventually burn out. The wires, too, may become more entangled over time or, conversely, drift apart. In this way, this fragile installation becomes a poetic reflection on love, loss, memory and transience.
